Is the WIFI Fast in Costa Rica?

As someone who operates several online businesses, you can imagine this question has always been a critical one—and I’m happy to report that YES, the wifi is actually great!

…That said, it DOES vary depending on where you are.

I’m happy to report I’ve live streamed presentations to hundreds of people around the world from our place in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica—and I’ve also done the same from various different hotels throughout the country. (Literally.) The majority of hotels and restaurants are going to have wifi—it’s rare these days that there isn’t unless you’re going to a really remote place. We also stream plenty of Netflix and Apple TV from the house, and don’t have any problem at all…and that’s with only 50 megas. (Standard for the country.) Everywhere we’ve gone countrywide is pretty well connected.

The real question, however, is not whether the wifi is fast, but whether or not the electricity will stay on. 😂 You’re much more likely to have a power outage than you are an issue with the wifi, but of course once the power goes out you won’t have wifi, anyway. :) This, more than anything, is the bane of my existence when working from Costa Rica: power outages are fairly common—maybe once or twice a week—especially during the rainy season. The good news, however, is that they don’t usually last more than an hour or two, so it’s still not a big deal. It’s only mildly frustrating if you’re on a work deadline or on a Zoom call with your boss—but even then, you’ve got a great excuse.

The way I compensate for this is just by making sure that I always charge my phone at bedtime (at least I can still connect to the internet on there, but not if I’m low on battery—and this is also useful as a flashlight), and by making sure I stay ahead of my work deadlines (because doing something last minute is almost guaranteed to get screwed up when the power goes out and you just were about to send that email!!!).

You’ll be pleasantly surprised with the availability of wifi and its speed—but worst case scenario, you can always turn on your international roaming and access the internet that way. Hooray for modern technology! Even in the jungle. 🍃🍃🍃
